CELEBRATING THE JOURNEY
This week I have seen a few victories on my slimming World journey. At group, I not only lost 2.5lbs on the scales, but also reached my first milestone: my ½ stone award in just two weeks. To top it off, I was crowned Slimmer of the Week, which meant two shiny stickers for my book and the basket of donated food to take home. Small tokens perhaps, but powerful symbols of encouragement and community.

Another celebration came at church, where we marked the 40th anniversary of our fellowship. In the past, occasions like this might have been a stumbling block, buffets and shared meals often make it easy to slip off plan. But this time, I prepared ahead and took an Optimised option with me. I enjoyed Slimming World’s Marry Me Chicken with salad and a sugar-free jelly dessert. The best part? I didn’t feel as though I was missing out for a second. I was fully part of the celebration, enjoying fellowship and food with everyone else, proof that Slimming World fits into real life when you plan with intention.
The group awards and celebrating at church, without compromise, came together as reminders that I’m on the right track. They showed me that planning, persistence, and community make a powerful trio.
RAINBOWS OF SUPPORT
Earlier this week, I had a vivid encounter with the weather that has stayed with me. I was driving when a sudden downpour began. The rain hammered the roof of my car with the ferocity of a typing pool from the 1980s, or the drumroll that opens the Last Night of the Proms. It was relentless, deafening, and almost suffocating. Then, just as suddenly as it had begun, it stopped.
When I stepped out of the car, I looked up and the sky was divided in two. Above me, heavy, oppressive storm clouds still hung low, dark and brooding. But beneath them, the sky was a brilliant blue, and the sun behind me lit up the horizon with a double rainbow stretched across the Thames.

I couldn’t help but stop, take it in, and reflect. It struck me that this is exactly what a weight-loss journey can feel like. The storm clouds are familiar to so many of us:
- The weight of disappointment after yet another diet attempt ends in failure.
- The shame that creeps in when we avoid mirrors or family photos.
- The voice of doubt that whispers, “You’ve been here before, you’ll give up again.”
These clouds are heavy. They hang over us and can make progress feel impossible. Sometimes, the hardest step isn’t losing the weight but finding the courage to try again.
But then there is the rainbow. It doesn’t erase the storm, the dark clouds are still there, but it breaks through with beauty and hope. For me, that rainbow is the Slimming World community I have at group.
Slimming World is not unique because of Food Optimising. At the core, it rests on the same principle as every other weight-loss plan: calories in versus calories out. What makes it different is the people. It’s the consultant who greets you by name, the group that cheers when you lose half a pound, the basket of food donated with love. It’s the laughter, the honesty, and the shared determination that turns tears of frustration into tears of joy. That’s the rainbow.
I’ve tried countless diets Atkins, Keto, Cabbage Soup, calorie counting, fasting. All of them “work” on paper, but none of them gave me what Slimming World gives: the gift of belonging. I’ve realised I thrive in community. Whether it’s in church, at Frazzled Café, or even a knitting circle, I come alive when I share the journey with others. Slimming World taps into that truth. It reminds me I don’t have to do this alone.
That rainbow over the Thames was fleeting, but it was also a promise, light breaking through darkness, beauty after rain, hope after struggle. In the same way, group is a weekly reminder that even when the clouds are heavy, brighter days are ahead. And sometimes, we don’t just see the rainbow, we become it for someone else, offering support, encouragement, and colour when their skies are grey.
For me, Slimming World group is the rainbow that reminds me I don’t have to do this alone.
PLANNING THE WEEK AHEAD
- The Body Magic Diaries : Begin logging activity with my Fitbit and walking with my neighbour, aiming for 10,000 steps daily.
- Adventures in Cooking: Try new dishes like Chicken Dhansak from the Slimming World Ultimate Curry Book and Sweetcorn Pasta Soup from the magazine.
- Inspiration: Dive into this month’s Slimming World Magazine — especially the Mind, Body & Soul feature and the Eating Style Quiz to reflect more deeply on my habits.
- Self-Care: Carve out intentional moments of rest amidst the busyness — even a short pause can be restorative.
FINAL THOUGHT
This week I saw first-hand how storms and rainbows coexist. The clouds don’t vanish overnight, but with support and perseverance, the light always breaks through. Slimming World, like life, is about walking together under the rainbow, knowing that the storm will pass and brighter days will come.
“When the rainbow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant.” (Genesis 9:16)
